TWO engineering companies with proud local histories have merged, with a pledge to "send a shiver down the spines" of competitors.

Milner Engineering, based in Bridge Street, Horwich, officially joined forces with KC Sheet Metal, based in Shepherd Cross Street, Haltiwell, on January 1 2006.

Milner, which celebrated its 125th anniversary last year, specialises in the manufacture of functional and decorative metal staircases.

It has worked for Wetberspoons and the Revolution Vodka bar chain, and made steelwork for Ashburner Street Market, Bolton and the Octagon Theatre extension.

KC Sheet Metal, which was formed by Keith Merrills in 1965, works mainly as a steelwork subcontractor on larger projects.

The new company, KC Milner Engineering, will operate with 12 staff from the existing KC site and will be jointly run by Milner managing director Brian Goth and Trevor Merrills, the son of KC's founder.
